This week I have a couple legitimate bear hunters on to talk bear hunting. Tad Sherman and Jeff Morris have been hunting buddies for many years. Whether bears, deer, elk, and especially pronghorn, these two have been smacking game with their bows and notching tags with the best of them. On top of that, they exemplify the utmost standards of hunting ethics and mentorship. Their example has influenced many hunters throughout the west. Their willingness to share their vast bear hunting and baiting knowledge is proof that they care about the future of hunting.

Baiting bears has had a level of controversy over the years. Keep in mind, as hunters we have fewer people that support our hunting passion than those who oppose it. Folks who oppose baiting bears are usually those who have not experienced it, or may not have the right information on the topic. Or, quite possibly, they oppose hunting in general.

As you listen to this episode, you have a responsibility as a hunter to understand the challenges we face in the future. If you oppose bear baiting, there is nothing inherently wrong with that. However, when you demonize those who choose to take advantage of the laws that allow baiting bears, you give ammunition to the anti-hunting populous and empower their message. This affects not just bear baiters, but all hunters. From waterfowl hunters, to archery mule deer hunters, to Midwestern whitetail fanatics. All of us pay the price of fighting against ourselves.

Instead of demonizing the folks who are passionate about baiting bears, take this episode to truly learn the level of difficulty this sort of hunt is, and the effectiveness of the species management it provides. As you know, black bears live in some very rough country. It's typically steep and extremely brushy. In many regions, baiting is the only method in which harvest results are consistent due to how elusive this creature can be.

Make a point to try and understand the perspective of another hunters passion and pursuit. In the end, we all have the same three goals; a freezer full of meat, the memory of a wild adventure, and the fulfillment of a successful hunt.
